What is precast concrete?

It simply is the use of concrete that is put into molds to create a product that can make an ordinary house into something spectacular. It can even be used in your landscaping as with concrete bowls for flowers, gas fire pits, or even water features for your pool.

Precast concrete

…is generally known as a construction product made by casting concrete into reusable molds. This use of molds “forms” the concrete, which is cured in a controlled process, and then it can be transported to the work site for application to the project.

The concrete finished product must meet standards that are maintained in the architectural community. In addition, this product can be colored, stained, or made to look like other products altogether. This latter fact makes it a preferred product to use by the DIY groups all the way to high-end architectural firms. You can even mix rock or “fine aggregate” into the mixture to produce, yet again, a unique and custom product.

What is Architectural Precast?

Precast is a construction product (mostly concrete) produced by casting concrete in a reusable mold or “form” which is then cured in a controlled environment, transported to the construction site and lifted or attached into place. In contrast, standard concrete is poured into site-specific forms and cured on site.

Why Use Precast?

Note: Some of the reasons stated below refer to structural precast panels. Architectural precast trims will not, in all probability, act as air barrier, reduce air infiltration and save energy.

Versatile:

  • Precast concrete allows for a very flexible design.
  • Precast concrete allows for a variety of textures and colors.
  • Precast is timely, in that panels and trim pieces can be manufactured before a project’s site work even starts – “just in time”.
  • Precast is produced by skilled craftspeople in a controlled environment to exacting standards.

Resilient:

  • Concrete is time-saving.
  • Concrete increases in strength.
  • Concrete is non-combustible.
  • Concrete is rot and insect resistant.

Sustainable:

  • Concrete is made of natural materials – water, stones, sand, and gravel.
  • Concrete can be almost entirely pre-made.
  • Precast Concrete is shipped to the project ready to install reducing waste and transportation impacts.
  • Concrete acts as an air barrier, reducing air infiltration.
  • Concrete emits little or no VOCs; does not degrade indoor air.
  • Concrete has a very low carbon footprint.

Affordable:

  • Concrete is, comparatively, an inexpensive building choice.
  • Concrete has minimal maintenance and repair.
  • Concrete buildings may have reduced fire insurance.
  • Concrete’s durability leads to a low life cycle.

How can I use precast to enhance our project if we have a smaller budget for architectural design?

Value engineering can be more efficient and cost effective if done in the early design stage before going to print. We can assist with that.

In house services:

Seawright Custom Precast, Inc. is a full service precaster. Our mold shop is large enough to handle any architectural project we have seen in the last twenty years. SCPC estimates all of our projects with a breakout of each piece required to complete your project. Value engineering can be done at this stage if you need assistance.

Basic Installations not requiring attachments:

Installation of low lying precast does not necessarily require mechanical attachments unless required by the owner. Low lying areas usually would be wall caps, pier caps, pool coping, and windowsills (with a ledge underneath). Window trims, on the first floor, and the upright legs of door surrounds can be installed without mechanical attachments.

A mechanical attachment is recommended on the horizontal portion of precast trim at entry doors. The importance of knowing where to require mechanical attachments is for cost savings. Field installation of mechanical attachments affect the cost of installations more so than plant cast-in attachment cost.

Using Architectural precast to enhance your project with a limited budget:

With the assistance of a knowledgeable precaster with design and installation experience, you can be directed to utilize the precast at locations that will catch the eye. It is not necessary to have precast on each and every windowsill on the building if you are looking to save money. A front door surround will go a long way to dress up the building.

Consulting:

With 34 years of installation and manufacturing experience, I can be of assistance in the early stages of your design. Although I am not a licensed engineer, my attachment methods have been tested through many years of installation, on many projects.

We can assist in designing attachments for your projects, at which time it can be engineered if required. We have a good track record in getting the attachment methods approved.

Precast concrete products save you time and money. Everything from precast concrete steps, columns, water features, bowls, and flag poles (just to name a few items).  Good concrete suppliers will have a large offering and here at SCPC inc we also do consultations for all your precast concrete projects. With over 40 years of experience in this industry we have seen a few things so we can help you make good decisions concerning your project.

What is precast concrete?

It’s a construction product that is produced by using a mold or form (which is reusable). Once the items are made they can be transported to the construction site or your home project; for the DIY’ers. Sometimes the molds are moved to the construction site and pored on-site to yield the desired precast concrete product.
